For a village its size, Manotick has an unusual amount of office space on its main street, and most of it is professional services: three accounting practices, three insurance offices, two financial-advice offices, a mortgage broker, a law firm and a travel agency, all within a few hundred metres of the mill. That is a function of who lives here — incorporated professionals, contractors, retirees with estates to plan — and it means most of the paperwork of village life can be done without driving to Barrhaven. This page lists each office, phone-first, with the one thing to know about how each kind of business is paid. Nothing here is paid for.

Accountants and tax

Three accounting practices keep offices in the village, which is more than most Ottawa suburbs of this size can say and reflects who lives here: a lot of incorporated professionals, contractors and small businesses with a corporate year-end. BDO Canada on Main Street is the national firm's Manotick office — corporate tax, assurance and advisory, and the one to call if the file involves a holding company or a CRA audit. Beck Ltd on Clapp Lane and Nancy McGlade CPA on Ann Street are the independent CPAs, and they do the bulk of the village's personal, corporate and trust returns. Book the corporate year-end conversation in the autumn, not in April; the independent practices fill by February.

Insurance — including car insurance

Three insurance offices sit within a block of each other on Main Street, and they are three different models. Oegema Nicholson Insurance is an independent broker: it quotes several insurers and places the policy with whichever fits, which is the model that suits an estate lot with a well, a septic system, an outbuilding and a boat, because those are the risks a standard product excludes. Co-operators and Desjardins are agents for one insurer each; they can be very competitive on plain auto and home, and both do life and business coverage. For car insurance the practical advice is to get a broker quote and an agent quote on the same day with the same driving record — Ontario auto rates vary more by postal code and insurer than most people expect, and K4M is priced as rural Ottawa, which helps.

Financial advisors and mortgages

Edward Jones has an office in the Manotick Mews plaza on Beaverwood Road and Lifelong Financial Solutions, a Sun Life advisor practice, is on Mill Street; both are the retail-advice model — commissions or a fee on assets, investing and insurance-based planning. If the question is a mortgage rather than investments, The Griffin Mortgage is the village's broker (Mortgage Alliance), and a broker matters more here than in the city because a home on a private well and septic, or on more than ten acres, is underwritten differently by different lenders — the broker's job is to know which ones say yes. Anyone offering advice should be able to tell you, in one sentence, how they are paid; that is the only question that reliably sorts the industry.

Law

The village has one law firm, and it is a full-service one. Blockhouse Law Partners LLP on Main Street does real estate, wills and estates, corporate and family work — the four things a village practice actually gets asked for. The real-estate side is the one most people use first: a rural closing here has a well-water certificate, a septic use permit, a survey question about the road allowance and often a right-of-way to the river, and a lawyer who closes in K4M every week will have seen all of them. For litigation, employment and immigration you are going into Ottawa; for a will you are not.

Three more office-based businesses worth knowing about. Maritime Travel in the Mews is a full-service travel agency — cruises, packages, and the kind of complicated multi-leg booking that is worth paying a human for. Robin Lea Photography on Main Street is a newborn, maternity and family portrait studio. Orbis Partners on Main Street is a marketing-research and analysis consultancy — a business-to-business firm that happens to be headquartered in the village rather than downtown, which says something about who is choosing to work from here.
